Your success as a negotiator will determine your success in life. Negotiating affects every aspect of our lives from business and personal to social. We are constantly negotiating, under all kinds of circumstances and about all kinds of situations.
We negotiate when we buy a car. We all know this; and many people dislike purchasing automobiles because they are uncomfortable with the negotiation process, especially when up against the car salesperson who makes it his or her career to negotiate. However, we are also negotiating each time we discuss what movie to see with our friend or significant other. We negotiate each time we try to convince our partner to go to one restaurant over another. At work we negotiate for time off, for salary increases, for which office or cubicle we are stationed at. Every time we sell or purchase an item or service there is opportunity for negotiation. We could go on and on, but you get the idea. We are negotiating all of the time. To get anything we want, we negotiate.
This is why I can say that your success in life depends on your success as a negotiator. The more you learn to negotiate, the more you practice negotiation skills, and the better you become at negotiating win-win deals, the more success you will have in your professional and personal life.
Notice that I said that you must be negotiating win-win deals. You want to not only negotiate ethically, but to ensure that your reputation for honesty and good deals is know by everyone you encounter. This is not just ethical, it is good business. Yes, you want to negotiate the best deal for yourself, but not at the expense of others. You must not cheat others, nor should you get the best of them by any underhanded means. Ideally you get what you want by helping the other party get what they want. You expand the pie rather than just divide it.
If you want to succeed, start increasing your negotiation powers today. There are countless books and articles on all aspects of negotiating. Check them out at your library or purchase a few. Read them! Learn what they teach. You can also find manyaudio programs on negotiation that you can listen to during your commute to work, while exercising or any other time that you have to listen. Download negotiation programs to your ipod or mp3 player to listen on the go wherever you are. There are video programs if you want to watch and learn. The point is, there are numerous negotiation resources out there. Study negotiation to succeed!
Studying negotiation is not enough! But wait, didn’t I just tell you to study negotiation from all those different sources? Yes I did! But studying is not enough. You must practice and implement the negotiation skills you learn. Negotiation is a skill. Some are naturally better than others, but everyone can improve. Negotiate small deals on a daily basis to practice for the larger ones that will come along. The more you negotiate, the better negotiator you will become. The more you practice effective negotiation skills, the faster you will become an effective negotiator. The sooner you become an effective negotiator, the more success you will have in all areas of your life. So what are you waiting for? Get our there and negotiate and succeed!
