Yes, right away.
A while back I talked to a local painting contractor; I asked him what he was charging. Most guys would get nervous; because, He might think I was looking to cut my price to get his jobs. I did assure him that I was only interested in helping him make more money. I was interested in raising the prices in my immediate market.
I expected a low price; but, was semi-shocked when he told me what he was making. He was charging in the low 30’s. Without saying what I was charging; because, until he knew better, he wouldn’t believe me. I stated that he was not charging enough. Of course his knee jerk reaction was to state that he was charging as much as he could without losing work.
After making my case that the price of the job was more important to him than it was to his clients, I asked him this, “Whatever you are charging, if you raised your price by 10%, would you lose work?”
So since he was charging $30/hr would he really lose work if he raised his price by 10% or $3/hr? He admitted that he wouldn’t run out of work if he tried that. I know he tried it because about a year later I ran into him at the luncheonette. He said he was so happy because after trying the “10%” rule he went on to keep rising until, at that time he was at $45/hour. He said the best part was that he was working much less and making more money. He cut down on his crew, and said he had to hustle so much less to provide jobs for his people.
Think about this, for every man that works for you, if you charge $3/hour more, you put $120 directly in your pocket per week or 3 painters making an additional $3/hour that are giving you a weekly raise of $360 real dollars. And I don’t advocate working for $33/hour. If you were to do what my friend did you would give yourself $15/man hour, or $1800 more per week going in to your pocket. Not by working harder; but, by working smarter.
