I Negotiate, You Win!

When we got married, my wife moved into my home - the one I grew up in and inherited from my grandparents after caring for them in their old age. My wife is a home stager so the first three months of our marriage all hell broke loose as are preferences and peculiarities collided.

Thankfully things smoothed out over time as we wore each other down. During our first year of marriage our house water heater (which lasted for 20 years - a miracle in itself) died and we had to buy a replacement. Next was servicing th air conditioner unit. Thirdly came the oven.

Unlike the other items I was able to price shop and buy online, my wife wanted to buy an oven herself. I was thrilled to simply give her my credit card and have her go for it, but Karla wanted me to go with her (a marital bonding thing if you will). So I reluctantly went along with it.

Happily I did because when I got to Sears Outlet many of the discounted ovens were chipped, had scratches, were not the color Karla wanted, or had something that she just didn’t quite like. Of course as I always say: “If momma’s not happy nobody is happy.”

Thankfully there was a sweet and sincere elderly lady working at the Outlet who kindly informed us that Sears also has good deals. When we drove over to the department store we saw some better ovens more to Karla’s liking. The problem was the prices marked above each oven were misleading and inaccurate.

Every oven I inquired about had a price tag over it which the salesman told me was for “another oven” and not the oven over which is was marked. I got a bit irritated with this sales technique or unethical pricing mechanism and asked to speak to the manager. The manager was a young, polite, and friendly guy to whom I introduced myself and got his name.

I showed the manager which oven we liked and then proceeded to point out that the oven we wanted wasn’t really priced truthfully as the sales rep had remarked that the list price was incorrect and that the fine print on the same ad said so if we were to buy an oven with Karla’s favorite colors and features.

At this point my wife Karla jumped in the discussion (as she’s quite a talker). I without hesitation pulled her to the side and said, “Look! I negotiate and you win. You pick whatever oven you want. Then you keep your mouth shut and let me do the talking thereafter.” My gregarious wife reluctantly agreed (wisely walking away since she really wanted a stove).

To quickly cut to the chase I asked the sales manager, “Dave, if you were out shopping and you saw a price over a product, what would you think?” He immediately agreed with my logic and admitted it was confusing (to me misleading). So I asked Dave, “Who is the district manager of Sears in this area? Please give me their name and phone number.”

Dave asked me to please wait while he got that information for me and returned. When Dave returned he did so with good news telling me that he got “authorization” to give me the oven for the list price I was mentioning ($200 less than the salesman’s price in the small print in the ad over the oven).

Though I didn’t want to go shopping with my wife that Saturday, it proved profitable nevertheless. On the way out the door I reminded Karla, “I negotiate, you win!”
